Cv carb tuning

The tower is plugged with a soft metal insert covering the mixture screw. Gaining access to this screw is key to fine tuning and must be remove. Important notes about CV carb tuning ! To properly tune, you MUST: 1. Have selected the BEST main jet for full throttle power (not just a good main jet - we mean the BEST main jet for power at high rpm). That eliminates the common severe tweaking of the midrange and lower tuning ranges to compensate for a wrong main jet. Start by covering the pilot passage hole with your thumb and use the nozzle of the compressed air on the mixture screw hole.

Air should come out of the air intake jet shown in the picture. Repeat the same procedure covering the mixture hole and using the air on the pilot jet hole. The stock CV carb uretor has a venturi diameter of 40mm (inch). The jet needle controls the flow of fuel from the float bowl through the main jet, needle jet holder, and the needle jet that the jet needle moves in and out of, and into the throat of the carb uretor. As we showed you in the last issue, the main jet is located at the bottom of the carb body,.

I know the answer because I played a role in the process. A CV carburetor ( Constant Velocity ) incorporates a vacuum operated slide that varies the venturi size within the carburetor , thus maintaining a constant velocity. Their CV carb looked a hell of a lot like the ones we develope and when properly tuned gave more horsepower and better gas mileage with no transitional flat spots.

The Mikuni CV carburetor can be tuned via methods, the main jet that controls fuel flow during full acceleration, the needle clip position that controls fuel flow during cruising and roll on throttle, and the mixture screws that regulate fuel flow during idle conditions. A CV carburetor (Constant Velocity) incorporates a vacuum operated slide that varies the venturi size within the carburetor, thus maintaining a constant velocity. Carburetor cleaning methods will also be shown. The moving air going through the carburetor will pick up fuel and mix with the air. Inside a carburetor is a venturi, fig 1. The venturi is a restriction inside the carburetor that forces air to speed up to get through.

A river that suddenly narrows can be used to illustrate what happens inside a carb. Installation of products in this catalog should be done by an experienced mechanic or service technician. Keihin carburetors are only legal in California for racing vehicles, which may never be driven on public highways or waterways. The pilot air screw is set at two turns open from the factory.

This may take a moment since the fuel bowl is empty. Best place to start improving highway and in-town fuel mileage is with the idle circuit. Gently screw the pilot or idle mixture screw until it just begins to bottom out.

Be careful not to damage the carb by over-tightening. Prior to any tuning , it is critical that the carburetor is completely clean. Follow the CV carburetor cleaning procedure first if the bike has been sitting for any significant amount of time or a dirty carburetor is suspected.

The idle drop method of adjusting the CV carb idle mixture. Step – Turn on the fuel petcock, engage the choke and start the engine. RPM is a good RPM if you have an accurate tach. Bike runs better but seems to get choked up when sitting at idle for long periods of time and I will have to blow it out to get it to idle correct.

Do I have the carb set to rich in this case? Some carburetors, such as the Quadrajet found in most GM vehicles, have a special screw and require a specific adjusting tool. The Quadrajet uses a Double D carburetor adjusting tool.

Visitor Thus spake Zarathustra-best technique is leave the freakin airbox in. No carburetor made today can match the Mikuni in this regard. We have chosen tuning components that, for the great majority of applications, are correct.

Chances are, you have had to do very little beyond adjusting the air screw and idle speed screw. Keihin is a well known carb maker in Japan, that has been making CV ( constant velocity ) carburetors for motorcycles for many years. This section features the PWK exploded views just to let you understand where the tuning components are located. The guidelines are the same for both and stroke.

On FCR carbs the main jet, slow jet, jet needle, air adjustment, slow jet air adjustment and gas valve are different and located elsewhere. Setting up CV carbs for a turbo. The small 34mm gsxr7carbs with alloy throttles and screws on the caps and floats are actually the best you can use when going turbo. I’m also using 34mm carbs on my turbo GSX with alu caps. This also aides with tuning an engine that is fitted with an exhaust system that is not intended for high performance.

If it needs to be changed the range is normally to 60. The air bleed uses main jets, the stock size is 40. The vacuum slide, needle, main jet, slow jet, idle mixture screw, idle ports, tranfer ports and accelerator pump, all assist in this mixing operation over the range of operating conditions.

The constant-velocity system provides a partial means of compensating for operation at different altitudes. The kit offers a wide range of tuning options for the CV carb. Carbs must be adjusted to the same float level. If the float bowls are fitted with drain plugs, fuel level can be inspected directly by fitting a piece of clear hose to a plug and inserting the plug in the float bowl. Some float bowls are fitted with drain valves opened by a screw, with a hose nipple on the outlet.
