Photo 2: Pull in the new wheel stud. Stop tightening when the head of the wheel stud sits flush with the back of the hub. Tighten with a torque wrench. If you’re just like everyone else, you’ve tightened the lug nuts on your car without using a torque wrench. Wheel studs should be pressed in from the rear.
Pound out the studs, insert the new ones, then use washers and a nut to start pulling them through. Types of wheel studs Screw-in wheel stud- This type of wheel stud can be easily screwed into any threaded bolt hole in the wheel hub. Because of this configuration, you have to remove the hub in order to remove or install this. Step 3: Get a new wheel hub seal and place it onto the hub.
Use a seal installer tool (or a block of wood if you don’t have an installer) to drive the seal into the wheel hub.
Step 4: Place the wheel hub onto the spindle. If the wheel hub had gear oil in it, fill up the wheel hub with gear oil. Break the lug nuts loose while on the ground (c) Jack the front wheel s of the car off the ground (a) Use jack stands (b) in the recommended locations to safely support the car.
Finish taking wheels off and set aside in a safe place, taking care to not to damage them. Well, not only did I get one in that needed a new stu but it needed studs. This doubles our fun for this video. The principal was the same for both studs.
Using the disc brake rotor and a series of washers over the stu the lug nut is tightened on the stu drawing the stud into the hub or axle. With your wheel off and your car supported safely on jack. As with all critical fasteners, all studs, nuts and bolts are to be installed with a Torque Wrench. Torque readings are important to provide the correct clamping load.
This is one auto repair that is less about. Beware— torque readings can be easily misrepresented on the tool as a result of improper preparation and installation. I guess the proper way is to remove the axle. Generally rear wheel studs are pulled into place by putting the stud thru the wheel flange hole and drawing it into place by tightening a nut onto the stud.
The problem with pulling a stud into the hole comes from over tightening the nut. To provide a larger hammer surface, we threaded an old lug nut onto the stud. A few whacks with a heavy hammer easily removed the old studs. With the hub flange in an orientation for clearance, we removed the old stud. You can easily see the length difference between the OEM (top) and ARP stud from Maximum Motorsports (bottom).
Installing ARP wheel studs. Sold by Stanios Industrial Supply Co. Some racing organizations, like the NHRA, require wheel studs to protrude a certain amount past the lug nuts-OEM Honda wheel studs are typically not.
Finally, install the new wheel studs , I used Doorman, using this tool and an impact wrench until the new studs are seated against the hub. The total job took me about hours per wheel , taking my time and being careful. The wheel studs screw in from behind the axle flange on the 35-spline Strange Alloy axles.
With the trashed section of threads already cut off, this operation was easy, and most importantly, there were no damaged stud threads to wreck the pristine threads in the axle flange. I have been able to draw studs in using lug nuts in the past, as long as the threads are lubricated. Certain wheel offsets and widths, as well as some big brake kits, often require wheel spacers, which as a result can leave few threads exposed on the OEM studs.
Today on This Old Boat Trailer we are going to repair one of the lug bolts in the hub. We know our parts and products. I installed ARP wheel studs for reasons.
I wanted a longer stud to ingage more of the lug nut, and I had a lug nut strip out. Here’s a step-by-step account of how to replace a broken lug nut stud (also called a lug bolt or wheel stud). Use a wrench to loosen the wheel’s lug bolts while the vehicle remains on the ground. Then jack up the vehicle and support it with jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and pull off the tire.
How to Replace Wheel Studs on a Ford. Knock the stud out of the hub with the hammer. Spread anti-seize on all six washers so they will spin easily under the lug nut. Insert the new stud followed by the six washers and then the lug nut. Run the lug nut in by hand until tight.
Refer to the chart (at right) to determine the number of turns or the depth of engagement typical for your stud or bolt size. Step 6: For the next inspections it will be necessary to temporarily install the wheel by snugging down the lug nuts or bolts in order to verify disc brake caliper clearance. Just make sure the hole in the washer is big enough for the stud to pull all the way through. Step 8: Put the wheel back onto the wheel hub.
Put on the lug nuts and tighten them down snug tight with the tire iron. If you intend to use an air or electric impact wrench, make sure that you do not exceed to 1pounds of torque.
If your axle hub material is cast iron or steel, your drill size will be 0. WHEEL STUD INSTALLER is rated 4. I used to be the only guy in the shop that had one of these and it saw action from everyone. Press-in studs are installed from the back of the hub with the larger section splined so that it doesn’t rotate. When a wheel stud breaks or is damage the stability of the tire is compromised.
If more than one stud breaks, it can cause the tire to wobble and make steering and driving difficult and unsafe. The rotor gets drilled a different size. Fill Your Cart With Color Today!
