Warp rotors

Heat is the number one cause of this, and can cause warping in more than one way: Glazing the brake rotor with material from the brake pad. This happens because brake pads, like tires, are made with different amounts of hardness and stickiness depending on the intended purpose. Rotors are cast in extreme heat — three to five times greater than the most aggressive braking situation. Physically “ warp ing” a rotor would require a similar application of extreme heat, which is impossible.


Obviously rotors aren’t invincible. Not only can this cause extreme thermal shock to propagate cracks (new rotors are susceptible to thermal shock), it also can cause warp ed rotors. It only takes a few minutes to break in the pad properly. That’s when your rotors will warp , especially if they’re thin from wear.


You might not be able to see your warp ed rotors , but you’ll probably be able to feel it. How to tell if you have warp ed rotors. Rotors are normally flat and smooth, and as the brake pads clamp down on them, your wheels stop. This can cause vibration or the loss of a wheel over time.


Uneven torque can cause vibrations or warp your brake rotors, causing poor brake performance and brake vibration. Torque specs vary by car and manufacturer. One danger of warp ed rotors is the increased stopping time.


Even if the surface is smooth, the vehicle will still take longer to stop. If the warp ed rotor is on the drive axle of the car, the stopping time of your vehicle will be more noticeable. A warped rotor can cause the brakes to temporarily fail. They will present a shake, pulsation, or shimmy in the steering wheel when braking for front rotors , or in the seat for rear rotors. If you have this vibration whether you are on the brakes or not, it could be something else, like a bad tire or a wheel out of balance.


To prevent rotors from warping, there are certain things to consider. Again, the rotors need replacement in less than 0miles. Rotor -hub surface must be clean metal to metal to avoid pulsing brakes, else you have warped rotors.


Uneven paint on rim- rotor surface means wobbling wheel which can feel similar to warped rotor or bent rim. Warped Brake Rotors—The Facts. The surface of the steel disc and the surface of the brake pad become identical in composition.


As the disc moves between the pads, friction material transfers in both directions, breaking and reforming bonds at the molecular level. This transfer of material in both directions is a normal and essential part of braking friction.

Brake rotors are the large metal discs that can be seen inside the wheels of cars and trucks. They rotate along with the wheels inside of a stationary brake caliper that contains brake pads. The caliper contains hydraulic pistons that cause brake pads to clamp down on the rotors which causes friction slowing down the car. An out-of-round or warped brake rotor can cause a noticeable an in some cases, extreme pulsating of the brake pedal. This is due to the malformed brake rotor striking against the brake pads during braking, which causes brake fluid pressure disturbances and manifests as a pulsating brake pedal.


Take off as little as possible (.002″ max per cut) Install brake pads that are designed for the vehicles service duty (proper heat range). Consult your brake specialist. Check caliper operation to make sure a caliper is not dragging.


Generally, warped rotors will only produce symptoms when the brakes are applied. As Larry mentione ball joints will not cause rotors to warp , and I can add that alignment will not cause this either. So it seems the guys at Monroe were just throwing that out because it sounded good. The again, sometimes the problems caused by control arm failure can be confused for rotor failure. In reality, the runout is almost always caused by uneven pad deposits on the surface of the rotor.

Rotors at minimum specs are more likely to overheat, give brake fade, and cause delays in braking during an emergency situation. Resurfaced rotors are also thinner and might warp more quickly, causing them to lose brake efficiency.

How brake rotors warp A common misconception when rotors are referred to as “ warped ” is that they are no longer straight when rotating (similar to how a bicycle wheel gets warped ). Your rotors are made of metal and when they get hot from lots of use they can warp. Any one of these problems can lead to the excessive heating that’s warping your rotor. Rotors are a cast metal and the heat generated by braking can release the stress of the casting.


When pads heat up they transfer material to the face of the rotor. Car owners will sometimes get very confused by the terminology used by auto mechanics. It is important to have some understanding of what the auto professionals are talking about.


If you recently had the tires rotated they may have over tightened the lug nuts causing the rotors to warp. I did tire rotations myself and used a torque wrench and tightened the lug nuts to the proper torque. I no longer recommend resurfacing rotors as resurfaced rotors have a tendency to warp very easily. These pads are manufactured with a high temperature fade resistance and a high friction level.


While most can be felt at high-speed braking, some extreme cases of rotor warp can be felt even at low-speed braking. It has a recessed surface that hugs the hub of the vehicle. The brake rotor stands vertically to the tire.
