Welding a cracked rim

My front rim of my XR650R cracked at the seamn (where the rolled rim is welded together). It lasted about months nd stsrted craccking again. Special Rims and Certi-fix.

Unlike sealing compounds (which are sometimes used as “quick fix” for small cracks to just stop the air leaks), welded areas are strong and prevent cracks from enlarging and becoming a hazard. If your wheel is cracked in the middle or on the back side lip (behind the spokes), it can most likely be welded. What happened is that the car hit a rock or pot hole which created a flat spot on the rim and cracked it. Picture shows the flat spot on the rim. I am wondering whether this can be welded without the rim actually deforming. Anyone has done this before? I sent my front KRS cast aluminum wheel to Framestraight after a horrible tire changing.


I just found a crack on my front rims seam so i will have him work his magic on my bike soon. I think they both are easy to weld with when using tig.

I found out my wheel had a crack in it the weekend before Christmas. Our team has over years of welding experience and has been welding aluminum wheels for over ten years. The rim is either extruded and welded at the ends (not likely), or spin forme like an aluminum pot. Spin forming is like cold rolling, it imparts a level of work hardening.


Welding defeats the work hardening, causing a weak spot. When I inspected the rim later I found a small one inch long crack running from the edge toward the hub. I don’t know if it was a new crack or whether an original weld had opened.


I am not a mechanic but I suspect the sequence of what happened is that the crack ruined the seal of the tire to the rim and because of that the air pressure was lost. Cracked alloy wheels , throw it away. If so, we remove the crack , tig weld the damaged area, lathe the wheel to create a good seal and then check for leaks. Your tire is then remounted and balanced. Most cracked wheels can be repaired within a hour turn around time.


The Weld Crack loose Week later. The Machine shop that did it, did a Very good job but he said that it would Crack from the Sidewall load. Welding is ok but one thing to take note is that welding will tend to pull (to one direction). I poured water on it and there were no air bubbles seeping out of it.


So I think only if there is load or pressure on the wheel the tire will slowly leak.
